Pro Surf Secrets - A Review

Cynthia Blake

Pro Surf Secrets is the title of the e-book written by Mike Low along with pro surfing co-authors Maz Quinn (New Zealand’s #1 surfer), John Gisby, (22 NZ National Titles), and Steve Colbert (Winner NZ Pro Am).

Pro Surf Secrets (PSS for short) gives surfers the ability to look behind the scenes and see just how these pros got to where they are. It takes an inside look at the mental game, the training advice, the techniques and skills, and even the safety knowledge that is needed when you are out in big surf.

A Huge Resource

This is an amazing resource. It is difficult to find books that deal with advanced surfing techniques and maneuvers. Most surfing books are of the “Learn From Scratch” variety, and barely give mention to skills beyond the S-Turn. Pro Surf Secrets is different, however. It caters to the intermediate to advanced level surfers who want to pick up their game and become the best surfers they can be - whether they want to enter contests or just dominate their local break.

What’s Inside?

Pro Surf Secrets is broken up into 70 chapters, each focused on a different technique or strategy. At 150 pages, the book is pretty hefty.

The illustrations in the book are great. There are photos and diagrams that show just what the author is talking about, and will help readers to visualize the skill. My only rub here is that there probably could have been more photos.

The Benefits

The benefit of PSS is in the way it focuses on changing your overall attitude towards your surfing. Instead of just going out day after day and just “surfing,” PSS will give you a new outlook and a new approach. You will learn to visualize moves before you practice them, improve your diet, keep a level head during a competition heat, paddle with more speed and power, sharpen your turns so that you throw curtains of spray, and more.

Pro Surf Secrets is also recommended by Editorial Director/Photographer Craig Levers of New Zealand’s Surfing Magazine. This is an amazing book that every surfer should have in their arsenal.
